Unit 1
Week 1 Brainstorm-means to solve a problem by having group members all contribute ideas freely. Flattened-Means made flatter, or more level or smooth Frantically-to act wildly excited due to worry or fear Muttered-means spoken in a low, unclear way. Official- means to be properly approved or authorized Original-means to do, make, or think of something new or different Stale-Old or not fresh Week 2 Advise- means to give one’s opinion or to inform. Desperately- means to try anything to change a hopeless situation. Hesitated- waited or stopped, especially because of feeling unsure humiliated means to be made to feel ashamed or foolish. Inspiration is a person or thing that stirs the mind, feelings, or imagination. self esteem- to have respect for oneself. Uncomfortably- means “uneasily.” Week 3 Collapse- fall down or cave in Crisis- difficult or dangerous situation Destruction- great damage or ruin Hazard- can cause harm or injury Severe- very harsh or serious Substantial- great amount or size Unpredictable- not able to tell beforehand Alter- to make different or change Week 4 Capabilities- have the needed skills Accelerate- move or cause to move faster Advantage- something that is helpful or useful Friction- force between surfaces that slows objects or stops them from moving Gravity- force that pulls objects towards one another Identity- who a person is or what a thing is Inquiry- search for information Thrilling- to be exciting Week 5 innovative- new or done in a new way enterprise- something difficult or important that a person plans compassionate- is to be sympathetic exceptional- be extraordinary funds- money that is ready for use process- series of actions performed when making or doing something routine- fixed way or method of doing something undertaking- something someone decides to do or start Week 6 We are testing for understanding of weekly vocabulary words. Unit 3 Week 1 Trustworthy- Means to be reliable Scornfully- Saying or doing that shows dislike or that you are making fun Logical- Makes sense and is based on reason Jumble- Confused mixture or condition Complementary- Makes something whole or complete Cautiously- Means to do it with care Acquaintance- Someone you know but is not a close friend Scrounging- Trying to collect something with difficulty Week 2 Organization- groups of people who join together for a purpose Assigned- given out as a task Gingerly- do carefully or with extreme caution Mature- show the qualities of being an a adult Residents- people who live in a particular place Scattered- spread or thrown around Selective- very careful with making choices Week 3 Boycott- refusing to buy from or deal with a person, nation, or business Encouragement- support that inspires hope and confidence Fulfill- carry out or finish Injustice- a lack of justice or fairness Mistreated- treated badly by others Protest- when they object to something Qualified- person has the needed abilities to do something Registered- has his or her name placed on it Week 4 Address- a formal speech Divided- separated into parts or pieces Haste- done with quickness in moving or in acting Opposed- against it Perish- disappear or vanish Proclamation- official public announcement of something Shattered- completely destroyed or ruined Tension- mental or emotional strain Week 5 Agriculture- science and business of raising crops and farm animals Advancements- improvements more an idea ahead Characteristics- qualities that belong to and help to identify a person or thing Concern- worried interest in something Disagreed- had a different opinion Inherit- receive from one's parent or parents Prevalent- commonly accepted, used, or widespread Resistance- act of fighting against overcoming something Week 6 We are testing this week. |

Astronomer- studies the stars and planets Crescent- curve that is wider in the middle and tapered at the ends Phases- different stages of the moon Rotates- turns around on its axis Series- number of similar things coming one after another Sliver- thin, often pointed piece that has been broken or cut, or torn off Specific- exact or particular. Week 5 Triumph- great victory Attain- work hard to achieve a goal Dangling- means hanging or swinging loosely Hovering- objects stays in one place in the air Stanza- poem can contain any number of lines Connotation- different than if I say the tree is thin Denotation- of joyful is Full of joy Repetition- repeat words in a poem, you are using Week 6 We are testing this week. |
